The goal of the 4-H Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) Initiative is to address America's critical need for more scientists and engineers by engaging 150,000 youth by 2013. 4-H SET activities and projects combine non-formal education with hands-on, inquiry-based learning in a positive youth development context to engage youth in improving their SET knowledge, skills and abilities. 4-H SET activities and projects combine the strengths of 4-H Youth Development non-formal experiential-based delivery modes and strong youth-adult partnerships to address SET content as defined by the National Science Education Standards.

California 4-H Technology Leadership Team

Previously the CA 4-H Computer Corps

The California 4-H Technology Leadership Team increases the use and awareness of technology in the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program.

Vision - That all youth in California

  • have access to technology through their 4-H program
  • are provided opportunities to become skilled in the safe and effective use of technology and its applications
  • develop the ability to apply their technical skill and knowledge as a tool to enhance their education, career opportunities, contributions to community, and personal life.
  • raise questions and identify problems to be addressed using technology.

Mission
The California 4-H Technology Leadership Team:

  1. Act as an advisory body to the State 4-H Office in analyzing and recommending technology use in the 4-H Youth Development Program.
  2. Supports the California State 4-H Science, Engineering and Technology initiative.
  3. Conducts professional development workshop and seminars in technology for 4-H members and volunteers.
  4. Provides information technology (IT) support and enhances technology usage for statewide 4-H events by invitation of the respective planning committee.
  5. Provides resources and assistance to 4-H Clubs/Units in using technology to increase and enhance communication.
  6. Provides resources regarding information technology to 4-H members and volunteers.
  7. Maintains a 4-H media library.

Membership
The California 4-H Technology Leadership Team is composed of 8-15 4-H members, volunteers and staff who serve a 14 month term.

  • Eligibility: Candidates must be 16 years of age or older by December 31 of the program year. Candidate must be enrolled in the UC 4-H Youth Development Program.
  • Term: Membership is a 14-month commitment from July through the following August.
  • New Applications: 4-H members, volunteers and staff must complete a new member application, due April 30 each year.
  • Continuing Membership - Annual Review:  Each year, members wanting to continue must complete an annual review.
  • Selection: The selection committee is composed of three people who have experience with the California 4-H Technology Leadership Team. The selection committee makes recommendations to the State 4-H Office.
  • Appointment: The State 4-H Office makes official appointments to the team.  The State 4-H Office may identify and appoint additional members to the team.

Team Culture
The California 4-H Technology Leadership Team adheres strongly to youth-adult partnerships.  The group is committed to drawing on individual member expertise and skills.  The group is organized on a self-initiative principle.  Members may propose projects that the entire team will discuss and decide if we want to devote our time and group resources.  Meetings are facilitated (parliamentary procedure is not used).  Those who have served on the group for a number of years act as mentors to new members.

Team Leadership
The group coordinator provides leadership and direction for the California 4-H Technology Leadership Team. Team members serve a project leads, which includes organizing tasks and ensure the project is completed.  Projects include logistics support (meeting facilitation, notes), IT support, Mobile Lab Manager, media and video, publicity, etc.

Sponsorship
Travel and registration fees are reimbursed by the State 4-H Office.  The California 4-H Technology Leadership Team is supported by The Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation through The California 4-H Foundation, The Wentzel Family, and Hewlett-Packard.

Mobile Computer Lab

The 4-H Technology Leadership Team announces the availability of their mobile computer lab. Fifteen PC laptops with Windows XP, Microsoft Office, Macromedia Flash, and other software is available for counties to use in teaching computer technology workshops. Advanced reservation of the lab is required. A team member may be present at workshop(s) to assist with setup/take-down. Transportation of the lab from Davis needs to be arranged by the county.
