2009 4-H Golden Clover Awards

The Golden Clover Awards recognize outstanding achievement of
4-H members, volunteers, and groups within the 4-H YDP.
Seventy-five nominations were submitted during the fifth year of the 4-H Golden Clover Awards. This included nominations of thirty 4-H volunteers, twelve groups, thirty-one 4-H members, and one 4-H program staff. Twenty-four 4-H Golden Clovers were awarded.
4-H Member Awards
Dillon Percy 4-H Member Leadership

Seth Washman, Placer County
Seth Washman is a well rounded 4-H member. He has been and is still an active member in many 4-H projects. The Engineering project is one of Seth’s in-depth projects that he focuses on. This project led him to start a Robotics project which he started by writing a grant proposal to cover the cost of the program.

Tyler McGee, San Bernardino County
Tyler has been a 4-H member since we has five years old. During his membership, he has accomplished innumerable things for himself and his community and still remains an active member in many group organizations and programs. Tyler also organized a pancake breakfast in order to raise donation money for a local deputy diagnosed with a brain tumor. He sold over 1000 tickets and raised over $15,000.

Brady Baldwin, Solano County
Starting as a simple Emerald Star Project, Brady has been working with his brother on an organization they created called “My Own Book”. The organization has grown so popular through out the community and many neighboring states, “My Own Book” now provides over 20,000 new and gently used books to children who might otherwise never own their own book.

Tory Ann Grainger, San Bernardino County
With Tory’s strong leadership skills, she has put together and helped with many wonderful and memorable events and activities. One project that she is renowned for is her contribution to the San Bernardino County Winter Camp. Because of her hard work, the new winter camp has gained popularity and has turned out to be a complete success.

Kevin Cameron, Orange County
Kevin has put in countless hours of hard work to simply help her community. When asked what 4-H meant to her, she replied that it was “about helping the community” and that “doing for others is so important, and it’s a huge part of the 4-H ideals, as well as my 4-H goals. I will continue performing community service in all the ways I can.”

Tracey Rice, Orange County
“Tracey is an incredible role model in his community,” says Lisa Bates, 4-H leader. When there is a person in need of help, Tracey is there to do what ever he can. He has been very active with 4-H events and planning, and inspires everyone around him to get involved. When Tracey is not busy with 4-H, he spends time at Charles Wagner Elementary School aiding in the mentorship of children with severe learning disabilities.

Amelia Clyatt, Siskiyou County
Amelia is an active member in the 4-H science, engineering and technology (SET) initiative. She helped organize projects and experiments to be presented for the Siskiyou County Hi 4-H SET After School Program. She also is one of the team members that will be introducing SET at the Siskiyou County 4-H Camp. There, Amelia will help plan different scientific workshops. |

Alexandra Castelanelli, San Joaquin County
Alexandra has created a fundraiser that is not only clever and unique, but eco friendly as well. At a local dog show, Alexandra was told that rubber milk machine liners made good dog toys. With that in mind, Alexandra went to work collecting and washing unused liners that her family had on their dairy farm. She was not only recycling, but earning money to support Californians rights to own and breed dogs. |

Having been involved with the 4-H program for nearly 67 years, Lois has been and continues to be an extremely active model volunteer impacting the lives of numerous youth through 4-H. Her involvement and leadership have influenced the raising and management of over $250,000 in 4-H scholarship funds and thus helped hundreds of graduating high school senior 4-Hers go on to higher education. |

Sherri & Jerry Bonnema, Santa Cruz County
Sherri and Jerry both do all they can so their 4-H members can receive the best experience 4-H has to offer. Sherri has always gone out of her way to help youth of all abilities and interest levels in her project meetings, and includes siblings when appropriate. Jerry is always there to help provide for not only his project meetings, but other projects as well. These two have been dedicated volunteers for the past 15 years and continue to offer their services to the community. |

In just 5 years, Pat has involved herself in numerous projects, events and has held many positions. Though none of her children were involved in 4-H, she gained interest as she watched the benefit that her eldest grandson received from 4-H. Pat is very enthusiastic and passionate about the program and what it represents. Her love and dedication for the 4-H program acts as a model for both youth and peers. |

Sue is a person with many great ideas when it comes to fundraising. Though organizing a fundraiser can be a challenging and time consuming task, Sue willingly manages to complete the tasks at hand. Her efforts have brought communities together and given 4-Hers the chance to travel with Citizenship Program of Cal Focus and Washington Focus.

Stefanie Stornetta, Sonoma County
Stefanie is a leader who is capable of touching the lives of 4-H members in ways that can change their lives forever. She has a gift when it comes to working with children, as her projects are considered to be some of the more popular in the club. Stefanie is also gifted with working with children who are disadvantaged or struggling to fit in with the rest. With her mentoring, the kids began to get involved with activities, learn to trust others and learned to step outside of their comfort zones and try new things.

Jennifer Washman, Placer County
Jennifer’s accomplishments stretch far and wide. She has created a Hi 4-H program within her county which plays a key role in helping high school 4-Hers prepare for interviews, put together resumes, and focus on getting ready for college. Before Jennifer became a volunteer leader, she was very active in the county, state and national levels. All of her experiences have made her an exceptional leader and active member in her community.

Linda Greco, Santa Barbara County
For 16 years, Linda has been a 4-H leader who has came up with new and interesting subjects to form into projects so youth can benefit from the information and help others. Her recent county wide project that she put together was the SBC 4-H DOERS (Santa Barbara County 4-H Disaster Outreach & Emergency Response Supplies). With this project, Linda was able to partner up with the Santa Barbara County Red Cross and obtain a grant to train 4-H members and adults, free of charge, to learn and teach Pet CPR to others in the community. |

Michael Fynan, Sonoma County
In 2006, Michael created a project centered on rock science that captured the interest of many youth and adults. In this project, members and parents travel to the Santa Rosa Mineral & Gem Society to study Lapidary, or rock polishing, how to properly display and mount finished rocks and their uses.

Patti has worked extensively to promote outdoor education in Sonoma County. As the educational coordinator for their 4-H camp, Patti motivates the teen leaders to prepare and innovative programs that are related to outdoor education, nature, animals found near the camp, plant species and more. One leader says that it is Patti’s attitude and perseverance that sets her apart from other leaders. |

East Hills 4-H Plastic Eliminators Project, Alameda County
Chance Boreczky, Jack Boreczky, Alex Daly, Clay Ferguson, Claudia Nute, Alexander Tornai, Benjamin Tornai, Walden Smith
Inspired by the groups Environmental Stewardship project, this group set out to make a difference in their community. The purpose of this project was to educate diverse groups in their community to “refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle”, how to apply these rules to daily life and its importance on the world. Two members also traveled to Washington DC to receive the 2008 President’s Environmental Youth Award from EPA director Lisa Jackson |

Camp Wahoo! Youth Staff, Santa Barbara County
Youth staff and Cabin Counselors decided that a family discount and new washing machine would do future 4-H campers and others who use the facilities at Camp Yeager camp grounds. The committee pulled together, held fourteen different fundraisers and grossed $6,069.36.

Windsor Bloco, Sonoma County
Windsor Bloco is located in Sonoma County and is a program targeting middle and high school students, teaching them cultural awareness, expression and exercise. The afterschool program to provides youth with academic success, lower drop out rates and discouraged gang activity. Youth learn drumming and dancing in Afro/Brazilian, Cuban, Hip-Hop and Reggaeton styles, and have performed locally and nationally. Starting with only 10 members, the program grew to have 65-70 members. The members have also noted that grades in school have improved, and many members are no longer affiliated with a gangs. |

Diana Stornetta & Lisa Jack, Sonoma County
When it comes to managing special events, both know exactly what should be done. Each event that Diana and Lisa plan has an educational factor that relates to the overall theme of the event. Further more, the two push the limits and organize the food portions to be thematic. When it comes to decorations and food supply, Diana and Lisa think “green” and reuse any materials they can. Food and larger decorations are donated form local businesses in their county. They have planned five events, each gaining popularity and attendance.

Serving Our Citizens In Need (SOCIN), Placer County
Isaac Humber, Michael Balaguy
When there is someone in the community that needs a little extra help, SOCIN really goes out of their way to give a helping hand. The goal of this project was to help the elderly and disabled in the community with anything that needed done. The group specializes in home and yard care and is accustomed to working long hours to get the job done. One of their projects was helping an elderly woman clean her property to pass a fire code. The group spent 10 hours on three separate occasions to complete the job. |

Valerie Williams is an ardent supporter of all youth enrolled in the 4-H club, military and after-school programs. She strives to inspire, nurture and encourage youth to achieve their fullest potential through participation in all aspects of 4-H. When an opportunity arises, Valerie’s inevitable response is to, “dig in and make the best better!” |
